Mar 15, 2023 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Playing in the program's first postseason since 2015-16, the Memphis Tiger women's basketball team will play host to Jackson State in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament on Thursday night.
Memphis (20-10, 11-4 AAC) earned the American Athletic Conference's automatic qualifying bid after they secured the 2-seed in the AAC Championship following a seven-game win streak. After defeating UCF in the Quarterfinals and moving on to the team's first ever AAC Semifinal game, the Tigers would fall to the eventual champions, East Carolina.
For the season, Jamirah Shutes leads the team with just under 15 points per game while Madison Griggs and Emani Jefferson are combining for nearly 25 points. Jefferson, along with Hannah Riddick and Destiny Thomas, have controlled the boards for Memphis this year grabbing over 40% of the team's total rebounds.
In the team's last five games, the Tigers have outrebounded their opponents by nearly 11 boards while forcing teams into 14 turnovers.
Jackson State (21-9, 17-1 SWAC) claimed the Southwestern Athletic Conference Regular Season, their fourth consecutive one, after going nearly perfect in SWAC play this year. They would enter the tournament as the 1-seed but fall in the semifinal round to Southern University on a buzzer beater.
As a team, JSU led the SWAC in scoring offense and defense, combined rebounds, assist/turnover ratio and blocks.
For the season, Jariyah Covington and Ti'lan Boler lead the team with a combined 23.5 points per game while Angel Jackson has brought down a team-high 199 rebounds.
This will be the 11th all-time meeting between the two Tiger teams. Memphis holds the series record at 9-1 with the last win coming in the 2018-19 season where, then freshman, Jamirah Shutes led the team with 20 points in her first game in a Memphis uniform.
Thursday's opening round of the WNIT it scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Coverage of the game can be found on ESPN3 and 98.9 The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
