Rock Clinches 4-1 Road Win at No. 13 Northwestern
Feb 24, 2023 | Men's Tennis
EVANSTON, Ill. – After a two-week break from the court, the Memphis Tiger men's tennis squad got back into action with a 4-1 road victory Friday night over No. 13 Northwestern.
The win improved the Tigers to 4-2 overall and extended their win streak to four matches.
"Amazing win today," Memphis head coach Paul Goebel said. "Northwestern is a great team, but we came out and were ready to battle from the very first point today. We've talked a lot about our energy and our competitiveness levels lately, so to see all the guys compete that hard was great to see.
"We now will focus our attention towards our match on Sunday at home against Tennessee state and look to keep improving."
Memphis got the match started with the doubles point after taking both pairings on at No. 2 and No. 3. Pau Fanlo and Pablo Alemany locked up the point with a 6-4 win on court three.
In singles, No. 35 Alemany doubled the Tigers' advantage with a 6-2, 6-4 sweep on the top line before Northwestern (7-4) got on the board at the fourth position.
Fanlo then won his fourth-straight singles match with a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 victory on court six.
Just 10 days after earning AAC Player of the Week, Rock cemented his status as an early favorite to bring home the award again. He battled from behind to take the clinch point 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 over Northwestern's Gleb Blekher at No. 5 to send the Tigers back home with a ton of momentum.
The Tigers make their home debut Sunday at 11 a.m. when they host Tennessee State at the MUS Tennis Complex. Free pizza will be on hand for those in attendance, so come out and support the squad.
