Feb 23, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball is set for a four-game weekend series with Youngstown State at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field with the first game scheduled for Friday night at 6 p.m. which will be available to stream live on ESPN+.
The Tigers and Penguins will play a double header on Saturday at noon (seven innings) and 3:30 p.m. (nine innings) before the series finale on Sunday at 11 a.m. (Note: Sunday's game time was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. but has been moved up to 11 a.m.) If the first game of Saturday's double header goes to extra innings, that game will become the nine-inning game and the second game will become seven innings.
The Tigers (3-1) won their opening-weekend series with Samford. Senior outfielder Brayland Skinner went 5-for-12 (.417) in the series with all five hits being extra-base hits (four 2B, one HR) and was named to the American Athletic Conference's Weekly Honor Roll for his performance.
On Wednesday, Memphis exploded for 19 runs and 19 hits and defeated Mississippi Valley State, 19-10, at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. Hudson Ross picked up the win for Memphis, striking out five and allowing two unearned runs in three innings of relief. Six Tigers collected multiple hits in the contest. Shane Cox, making his first start of the season, went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI. Jake Curtis continued his hot start to the season with another three-hit effort and Anthony Hansen clubbed his third homerun in the season's first four games.
The Penguins (0-4) dropped a pair of games to Illinois and a pair of games to Wake Forest over opening weekend.
"They played a tough schedule last weekend," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "They dropped two to Illinois and two to Wake Forest who are both perennial regional teams with good arms and quality offense. I think they kind of ran into a buzzsaw opening weekend, but they're a gritty club who is going to play hard. I think there are some similarities between them and Samford. Coming into a four-game weekend, which are always tough, you want to win the series. I think it will be a dog fight every game."
All fans will receive free admission to Tiger home games in February and March, and kids ages 12 and under get in free all season long. Half-season ticket packages are available at GoTigersGo.com for all games beginning in April.
