Tigers Fall to RV/RV Arizona in Opening Game of Battle 4 Atlantis

NASSAU, Bahamas – The University of Memphis women's basketball team opened the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament Saturday afternoon against RV/RV Arizona. The Tigers hung with the Wildcats through the first two quarters, but sharp shooting from the Wildcats in the second half was the Tigers' downfall as they suffered the 90-67 loss.
The Wildcats (5-0) opened on a hot streak – taking as much as a 16-point lead in the first quarter. Memphis pulled a seven-point swing to pull it to a 24-13 game after a Kai Carter pull-up jumper. The Tigers pulled within 10 of Arizona to end the quarter after a 5-0 run when Layken Cox completed a three-point play and Alasia Smith picked up a steal-and-score layup.
Memphis (1-3) faced a 28-18 deficit heading into the second quarter.
The Tigers did not back down easily, stringing together an 8-2 run to open the second frame and get within four of the Wildcats.
Despite Arizona continuing to score, the Tigers got as close as two points after back-to-back baskets from Carter and Raven Simsmade it a 30-28 game with just under seven minutes left in the half.
Arizona and Memphis traded baskets throughout the quarter – but a three-pointer from Madison Griggs cut into the Wildcats lead and the Tigers faced a 42-36 disadvantage heading into halftime.
The Wildcats opened the second half with a 9-0 run to push their lead back out to 15. Memphis battled with Arizona, trading baskets with the Wildcats throughout the quarter. Memphis scored on its final four possessions of the quarter and trailed 67-54 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
It was all Arizona in the final quarter; the Wildcats outscored Memphis 23-13 to take the game by a 90-67 final score.
Kai Carter and Alasia Smith led the team in scoring with 22 points apiece and Smith brought down a game-high 11 rebounds. As a team, Memphis shot 38-percent from the field and forced Arizona into 23 turnovers.
