LOS ANGELES -- The Memphis Tigers men's tennis team brought home a 4-3 win over in-state foe Vanderbilt Sunday in the ITA Kick-Off on the West Coast.
The Tigers picked up their first win of the spring, improving to 1-2.
Memphis won the doubles point with Harry Rock and Conor Gannon winning the first match, 6-2, on court two before Pablo Alemany and Pau Fanlo clinched the point with a 7-5 victory at the third position.
Fanlo got the singles action started by blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position to put the Tigers in front 2-0.
Vanderbilt came back to even the match with victories on courts two and three before No. 39 Pablo Alemany swept VU's Joubert Klopper 7-6 (1), 7-6 (2) to push the Tigers back in front.
The Commodores responded with a win on court five, forcing the match to come down to the final singles battle.
Sophomore Conor Gannon came through big time for the Tigers at the No. 4 slot after falling behind 4-6 in the first set. The Dublin, Ireland native stormed back to win 6-2 and 7-6(2) in the tiebreak to earn the victory and his first clinch as a Tiger.
"It was a super tough match today and I'm proud of our guys for how we handled some pressure situations," head coach Paul Goebel said. "Our doubles energy was much better and allowed us to get a 1-0 lead.
"Pau did a great job to get off the court first with an almost flawless performance, Pablo did great to bounce back from yesterday and get a win, and Conor showed great determination to battle back in the third to get his first clinching win as a Memphis Tiger. We are now looking forward to a good week of practice before our next match against South Florida on Saturday."
