Tigers Fall at No. 20 Duke
Jan 20, 2023 | Men's Tennis
DURHAM, N.C. - Memphis men's tennis battled up and down the lineup, but ultimately dropped a 5-2 decision at No. 20 Duke Saturday to officially open its spring campaign.
After dropping the first doubles match, Pablo Alemany and Pau Fanlo teamed up on court three to get a 7-5 victory and pull the match even before Duke earned the doubles decision on court one to go in front 1-0.
In singles action, Memphis took the lead after Jeremy Taylor and Alemany won at the No. 5 and No. 1 positions, respectively. Duke responded, however, with four-straight wins to secure the 5-2 win.
No. 39 Alemany picked up a straight-set victory in his singles match over Duke's No. 4 Garrett Johns 6-1, 6-3 to win both of his matches on the night.
"It was a tough loss today," head coach Paul Goebel said. "Duke is a good team, but we beat ourselves at times. We'll have a lot of tests like this match throughout the season and I'm hoping we can really work on enjoying competing in pressure moments.
"Now it's about putting in a good week of practice before facing UCLA."
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 against UCLA in Los Angeles, California for the ITA Kick-Off weekend. They will then battle either Vanderbilt or USC on Sunday.
