Tigers Open Five Game Home Stand with Xavier
Aug 31, 2022 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following an opening weekend that saw Memphis outscore their opponents 6-1, the Tigers will come home for the first time this season when they host the Musketeers of Xavier.
Memphis (1-0-1) had an explosive start to their season with a 5-0 shutout over Queens. Hayden Anderson, Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos, Jovan Prado, Emanuel Santos and Alberto Cruz all scored in the Tigers season opener while Colin Welsh and Max Kaplan combined for the shutout.
While their second game of the weekend start out with the lead following Gabriel Christensen's goal in the 22', the Cougars would come out swinging in the second half and tie the match just two minutes in.
"We played well against Queens," said head men's soccer coach Richard Mulrooney. "Our energy was great and that helped with the team's confidence going into Sunday's game against College of Charleston."
Xavier (1-0-1) is coming off a similar weekend to the Tigers; the Musketeers opened the season with a 1-0 win over Virginia before playing to a 1-1 draw with Eastern Illinois on Sunday night. Brandon Osterholt and Nicolas Hald Willumsen scored for Xavier over the weekend while Cole Jensen made 11 saves in 180 minutes of work.
"Xavier is a quality opponent, and we need to make sure we make the most of training this week because anything less than a stellar performance won't give us the outcome we're in search for," said Mulrooney.
This week's match will be just the second time in program history that Memphis and Xavier have met. Last time when the team's played one another back in 2019, the Tigers came away with the 3-2 win in double overtime behind three goals from Sam Ashton.
Thursday night's game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kick-off at the Track & Soccer Complex. Coverage of the match can be found on ESPN+ and on GoTigersGo.com.
