Memphis Athletics Makes an Impact in Community in 2021-22
Jul 11, 2022 | General
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After two years with limited interactions due to the pandemic, Memphis Athletics was back in the community during the 2021-22 athletic year. Student-athletes, coaches and department staff logged 1,490 hours of community service and had an estimated economic impact in the City of Memphis of $36,890.
Memphis Athletics has prioritized serving the community as part of its "We Are M.E.M.P.H.I.S." culture statement, where the 's' stands for "serve." The culture statement is a component of #MemphisRising, which is a comprehensive vision to guide the department's progress through the 2020s.
"Our student-athletes have missed connecting with the community during the pandemic, and this past year our teams and staff members really embraced being able to meet people and make a difference," Memphis Director of Student-Athlete Development Katie Martinez said. "Service not only impacts our community members, but it also helps our student-athletes and staff form an identity of being part of Memphis in unique ways."
Memphis Athletics' year in the community included working with children through recreational activities and engagements at elementary schools, Youth Villages, Madonna Learning Center, LeBonheur Children's Hospital and many others. Additional department initiatives included sponsoring 55 children for the holiday season, distributing over 2,500 books at local elementary schools through ARISE2Read and donating goods for the Shelby County Schools Necessity Drive.
Furthermore, Tiger student-athletes spearheaded involvement with the Be The Match Foundation, which is a drive to register potential bone marrow and blood stem cell donors. The three-day drive on campus added over 300 new heroes to the registry, including many student-athletes.
To find and manage many of these opportunities, the athletic department partnered with the University of Memphis' Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism.
