OXFORD, Miss. – With an early lead and fight through the final pitch, the Memphis Tigers (12-6) put up a valiant effort in an 11-8 loss to the #1 Ole Miss Rebels (16-4). Memphis led 4-1 after 1.5 frames before the Rebels scored nine times over the second and third innings. The Tigers put the tying run in the on-deck circle in each of the final two innings but were never able to get the potential tying run to the plate.

How it happened:

SS Jacob Gonzalez led off the bottom of the first with a single, one of his four hits on the night, and later scored on an RBI double by CF Justin Bench
In the second frame, Memphis sent eight men to the plate against RHP Jack Washburn (ND), as two runs scored on an RBI single by 1B Chris Swanberg and C Brennan DuBose tallied a two-run home run, his first home run of the season, as Memphis led 4-1 after 1.5 innings
The first seven Rebels to bat in the home half of the second inning reached base and eventually scored, as Ole Miss scored seven runs on three hits in the inning to lead 8-4
Ole Miss added two in the third on two singles paired with two Memphis errors to lead 10-4
The Tigers got a run back in the fourth on an RBI single by CF Zach Wilson, while each team scored in the sixth; Memphis on a home run from LF Ian Bibiloni and the Rebels on an RBI single from 3B Reagan Burford, as Ole Miss led 11-6
A walk and a pair of singles led to two Memphis runs in the eighth before Dylan DeLucia stranded a runner in scoring position and the tying run on deck, while Johnson worked around a single from SS Ben Brooks in the ninth as he struck out the side and secured Ole Miss' 11-8 win

Notables:

Brooks reached base twice and extended his on-base streak to 18 games
2B Austin Baskin (0-5) and RF Blake Daniels (0-5) each had their hit streak come to an end
Memphis' 7/8/9/1 hitters each had two hits and combined for eight of the Tigers' nine hits

Swanberg recorded his fifth multi-RBI game of the season, tied for the second most on the Tigers
