Six Memphis Teams Lead AAC in Graduation Success Rate
Nov 15, 2022 | General
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis had six teams lead their respective sports in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in Graduation Success Rate (GSR).
The Tigers led all AAC football squads in GSR, while baseball. men's tennis, women's golf, women's tennis and volleyball all tied for the lead in the conference. Also, Memphis had six teams post 100% GSR scores – baseball, men's tennis, mixed rifle, women's golf, women's tennis and volleyball.
In the NCAA's GSR report for the most recent 2014 cohort (2011-14), which calculates the rate at which student-athletes graduated within six years, Memphis' GSR was 93 percent. That figure is the fourth highest in the American Athletic Conference and above the Division I average of 89 percent.
"We continue to perform at a highly impressive level academically, thanks to the efforts of our student-athletes and dedicated Academic Support staff," said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Laird Veatch. "Our coaches and everyone in and around our programs know and support the expectations of academic performance at the University of Memphis."
Memphis' 2014 cohort (2011-2014) had a 94 percent GSR, 2013 cohort (2010-13) had a 93 percent GSR, the 2012 cohort's (2009-12) was 92 percent and the 2011 cohort's (2008-11) was 90 percent.
"I'm proud of the hard work our students, CAAS staff and coaches do to pursue the goal and importance of graduation," said Associate Athletic Director, Center for Athletic Academic Services P. Fernandez West.
The GSR differs from the FGR in that it adds transfer students, mid-year enrollees and non-scholarship students (in specific cases) to the sample. This allows the GSR to more accurately look at student-athlete success by taking into account the full variety of participants in NCAA Division I and tracking their individual outcomes.
