ITA Regional Championships Provide Learning Experience for Tigers
Oct 24, 2022 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's tennis team competed in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships over the weekend in Knoxville and picked eight total victories and a trio of wins across the main draws in both singles and doubles action.
Sophomore Emily Meyer earned three of the Tigers victories behind a 7-6 (6-4), 6-4 win in the main singles draw over Purdue's Tara Katarina Milic and a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set victory in Saturday's extra action.
Meyer also teamed up with Monique Woog as the No. 3 pairing in the main doubles draw and took down Ball State's No. 4 duo, 8-2. The Tiger tandem ultimately fell in the round of 16 to the top overall seeds Eleonora Molinaro and Daria Kuczer from Tennessee in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-5). The Vols advanced to the championship of the doubles draw before an injury brought their journey to an end.
Senior and No. 9 seed Aran Teixido-Garcia defeated Tennessee's No. 10 seed Eleonora Molinaro in a sweep (6-4, 6-4) in main singles before earning another straight-set victory (6-0, 6-3) in extra action.
All other wins came in singles on Saturday with Woog winning 6-3, 6-2 against Ball State and Camila Soares taking home a three-set battle with No. 3 seed Mariya Shumeika from East Tennessee State, 6-0, 4-6 (10-6).
"This year's ITA Regional Championships was a great learning experience for the girls," Memphis head coach Hayden Perez said. "We hadn't competed very much leading up to the event so I don't think we were "match tough", however, we did compete as well as we could have and the girls always gave their best effort.
"We are looking forward to some great competition in Starkville this weekend at the John Cade Invitational."
Up Next:
The Tigers will venture to Starkville, Mississippi this weekend for the John Cade Invitational, held Oct. 28-30.
