MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following an exciting opening weekend of games, two Memphis women's soccer players have collected the first American Athletic Conference awards of the season; Saorla Miller was named this week's Offensive Player of the Week while Kimberley Smit claimed the Defensive Player of the Week honor, the league announced on Monday.
Miller, a junior hailing from Nova Scotia, opened the season with a bang after scoring three goals in the team's 4-0 season opening win over Southeast Missouri State. After scoring in the 9' off an assist from Claire Abrey, Miller would net two more on her own in the 14' and 61'.
This is the first Player of the Week win for Miller.
Smit, a senior from the Netherlands, played a major role for the Tigers in their opening weekend. She helped lead the team to a shutout in their opening match of the season while holding SEMO to just one recorded shot. Smit also played a part in holding No. 23 Ole Miss to just seven shots in 110 minutes of play in the team's 1-1 (2OT) draw.
This is the second Player of the Week win for Smit in her career.
The Tigers continue their home stand this weekend when they welcome Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Indiana to town on Thursday and Sunday, respectively.
