MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Head women's basketball coach Katrina Merriweather has filled out the remainder of her coaching staff with the hiring of Michal Miller as the team's Video Coordinator.
Miller comes to Memphis after spending the 2020-21 season with Merriweather at Wright state as a volunteer coach. Due to the limitations of the pandemic, Miller handled behind-the-scenes tasks such as game recording, utilizing Synergy Software, taking and analyzing stats and other duties.
"It's my pleasure to reward a former player who assisted us after graduation without compensation or credit," said Coach Merriweather. "That is just a testament to her character."
A vital role on the team, Miller finished her playing career under Merriweather at Wright State in the 2019-20 season where she started 27 of 28 regular-season games and played the fourth-most minutes on the team at 26.6 per game. She averaged 12.7 points per game and had 20 double-digit scoring games, including four 20-plus point games. She was named to the All-League Second Team and was just the second player in Wright State history to be named MVP of the conference tournament during the 2018-19 season.
"Michal is a proven winner who has a heart of gold," Merriweather said. "She possesses the personality, work ethic and loyalty that it takes to be successful in our profession. Her path hasn't been the smoothest, and her unique experience and perspective will allow her to relate to our young women during their challenging times. Her addition to the Wright State program was critical in the University's first outright conference championship.
"She is a fearless competitor who loves the game of basketball. She played an unsung role as a volunteer coach who carried out duties that were critical in our success. It is my pleasure to reward her commitment and loyalty by bringing her with us to join the Tiger family."
Before joining Wright State, she led powerhouse Trinity Valley to the NJCAA National Championship game following a game-winning buzzer beater in the Final Four.
Miller hails from Michigan City, Ind., and played her high school basketball at Michigan City High School. She was named to the prestigious Indiana All-Star Team in 2015.
She earned her associates degree in liberal arts in 2018 and a bachelor of science degree in organizational leadership in 2020.
