MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's soccer has been picked to finish the 2021 season second in the American Athletic Conference, the league announced Tuesday. Senior Tanya Boychuk, junior Mya Jones, and sophomore Grace Stordy have all been named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
The Tigers received three first-place votes and 59 points in the projected order of finish for second. South Florida, who claimed the 2020-21 AAC Tournament Championship, was picked as the conference favorite with six first-place votes and 62 points. SMU (44), Cincinnati (41) and Central Florida (40) round out the top-five favorites from coaches for this season.
"It's humbling to be picked towards the top in this strong of a conference," said head women's soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. "This is a very tough league and there are no 'easy' games when it comes to the American."
Tanya Boychuk, Mya Jones, and Grace Stordy found themselves among the 12 names on the Preseason All-Conference Team.
Boychuk, who wears the captain's sleeve for the Tigers, was named a USC Second-Team All-American, USC All-South Region, and AAC All-Conference First Team last season after notching three goals and one assist. She was also named as the AAC Offensive Player of the Week on March 29 after scoring two goals, including the Golden Goal, in the team's 3-2 (OT) win over then No. 6 Vanderbilt.
Jones, who claimed the AAC Midfielder of the Year award last season, recorded one goal and four assists in the team's shortened season with two of her assists coming against in-state rival Vanderbilt.
Stordy, who had an excellent freshman campaign as the AAC Rookie of the Year and named to the All-Rookie Team, played, and started in all 12 matches for the Tigers and scored three goals and added in one assist last season. Stordy also claimed the AAC Rookie of the Week honor on March 8 after recording the game-winning goal in the team's 1-0 win over Central Florida.
"This is very well-deserved for the girls and I'm proud of them. This is an extremely solid conference and being named to this is an honor," said Coach Monaghan.
