MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers earned an at-large bid to the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship and will take on Georgia Tech Saturday at 9 a.m. CT in Knoxville, Tenn.
Â
The 35th-ranked Tigers (9-8) are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018 and seventh in the last nine years. The 2020 tournament was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
"I couldn't be happier for our guys to get back to the NCAA Tournament," Memphis head coach Paul Goebel said. "They have worked extremely hard and sacrificed a lot to earn a spot in the tournament field. They showed great teamwork and support for each other all year.
Â
"We know we have a very tough first round opponent in Georgia Tech, but we look forward to the challenge."
Â
Georgia Tech (13-9) is currently ranked 30th in the nation. With a win, Memphis would advance to play either No. 3 national seed Tennessee or Alabama A&M on Sunday at noon CT.
Â
First- and second-round competition takes place this week and features four teams playing in a single-elimination format. The winner of each site advances to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., where the 16 remaining teams will compete for the national championship May 17-28.
Â
All NCAA Tournament matches will be regulation dual matches.
