MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Tigers junior forward Tanya Boychuk and junior defender Kimberley Smit have been named All-South Region performers by the United Soccer Coaches.
Â
The pair also earned All-American Athletic Conference First Team honors at the end of the season, which saw the Tigers reach the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year and fourth in the last five overall.
Â
"I couldn't be happier for Tanya and Kimberley," Tigers head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "They were a major part of our success this season, not only on the field but also with their leadership. Awards like these are reflective of our entire team. As a coach I get excited when teammates are happy for each other, too, and that's what you have with Tanya and Kimberley and our entire locker room."
Â
Boychuk started all 12 games for the Tigers this season and tied for the team lead with three goals, and she also had an assist. The Edmonton, Alberta, native scored twice in Memphis' 3-2, overtime win at No. 6 Vanderbilt on March 28. Her 96th-minute golden goal gave Memphis its second-ever win over a top-10 opponent.
Â
Smit was part of a Memphis defense that allowed just eight goals on the season, good for third in the conference. She also had a goal and two assists this year, with one of the assists coming in the win at Vanderbilt. Smith, hailing from Wassenaar in the Netherlands, was on the field for every minute of the season.
Â
The Tigers went 8-4 in the 2020 season, which was played this spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the win at Vanderbilt, it also included a perfect 5-0 mark at home.
