Tigers battle back but end up short at No. 21 USF

TAMPA, Fla. – The Memphis Tigers fought back after falling behind 2-0 in the first 19 minutes of the match but could not complete the comeback in a 2-1 defeat at No. 21 USF Saturday night in Tampa, Fla.

The 14th-ranked Tigers (7-2, 5-1 AAC) saw their five-match winning streak come to an end. USF (7-0-1, 6-0 AAC) clinched at least a share of the American Athletic Conference championship with the victory. The Bulls have 18 points on the season, with Memphis right behind with 15.

After the Bulls scored in the 9th and 19th minutes, Memphis' Grace Stordy got the Tigers on the board with a 36th-minute goal off an assist from Stella Downing. It was Stordy's third goal of the season, which is tied for the team lead.

The Memphis defense remained solid for the remainder of the game, and the offense had its chances but could not convert. The Tigers had three corner kicks and five shots in the second 45 minutes, including a potential game-tyer by Clarissa Larisey in the 72nd minute that was saved by the USF keeper.

Each team registered six shots on goal in the contest.

Saturday's match was the third-consecutive time Memphis and USF matched up when both were nationally ranked.

The Tigers wrap up the regular season at home next Sunday, April 11, against East Carolina. First touch is set for 1 p.m., and the match will be televised on ESPN+.
