Apr 19, 2021 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers have earned their third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and will face Utah Valley in the first round of the 2020 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship on Wednesday, April 28 at 3 p.m. CT. The match will be played on the campus of East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.
This is Memphis' ninth tournament trip in program history and fourth in the last five seasons. The Tigers (8-3) secured one of 19 at-large spots in the 48-team tournament field.
"We couldn't be more delighted to be in the NCAA Tournament," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We're absolutely over the moon right now. There are no easy games in this tournament, but we're used to that playing in the league we play in.
"It's been such a crazy year. I'm really happy for our players. We're thankful for the NCAA committee and everyone who thought we deserved this opportunity, and we're going to make the most out of it."
The Wolverines (12-4-4) earned an automatic bid to the tournament by winning the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. Should Memphis defeat Utah Valley, it would advance to play No. 6 national seed Arkansas at 3 p.m. CT on May 1, also on East Carolina's campus in Greenville.
"This morning, our coach calls me and is asking 'how is the team doing, how are you doing' after the (conference tournament) loss, and then he said that we're going to schedule a meeting and say our goodbyes," Tigers junior forward Tanya Boychuk said. "And then we come in today and find out we got an at-large bid, and I honestly cried tears of joy. We are so thankful to have this opportunity. I'm speechless."
The entire tournament will be held in Cary, N.C., and the surrounding areas. Each of the first four rounds will be available on NCAA.com, while the national semifinals will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and the final will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
