Tigers well represented in AAC end-of-season awards; tournament play starts Thursday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers cleaned up in the American Athletic Conference end-of-season awards, with sophomore Mya Jones earning Midfielder of the Year honors, Grace Stordy voted Rookie of the Year and six others earning all-conference recognition.

Juniors Tanya Boychuk and Kimberley Smit were voted to the All-Conference First Team by the league's coaches, along with Jones and Stordy, and seniors Clarissa Larisey, Elizabeth Moberg and Lisa Pechersky were named to the All-Conference Second Team.

Haylee Spray and Stordy earned All-Rookie Team honors.

Memphis (8-2, 6-1) begins the hunt for an AAC Tournament championship Thursday at 2 p.m. CT against Cincinnati in Tampa, Fla. The Tigers earned the No. 2 seed in the 2020 AAC Women's Soccer Championship, just behind top-seeded and host USF. With a victory Thursday against third-seeded Cincinnati, the Tigers would advance to the championship game Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.

All games in the tournament will be broadcast on ESPN+.

From her midfield spot, Jones contributed a team-high four assists, tied for second in the AAC, and had 28 shots, which was tied for most in the conference. Stordy scored three times on just nine shots, four on-goal, which tied for the team lead alongside Boychuk, Larisey and Pechersky.

With three goals apiece, the quartet finished the regular season tied for fifth in the AAC in scores.

Moberg, Smit, Spray and Stordy were part of a Memphis defense that allowed just eight goals this season, good for third in the conference, and Moberg's goals-against average of 0.79 was second-best in the AAC. Six of her 10 outings between the pipes resulted in shutouts.

Jones' first-team spot was a unanimous selection, as was Stordy's place on the All-Rookie Team.
