Mendjiadeu earns second-team All-AAC honors
Mar 07, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The American Athletic Conference announced on Sunday that University of Memphis women's basketball player Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu has earned second-team All-AAC honors for her performance in the 2020-21 regular season. American Athletic Conference coaches supplied the ballots for regular season honors, with coaches only being allowed to vote for players on opposing teams.
Mendjiadeu, the senior forward from Nkongsamba, Cameroon, was a pre-season second-team All-AAC choice, and she fulfilled expectations this season by leading the Tigers in both scoring (13.8 points per game) and rebounding (10.55 rebounds per game). Mendjiadeu recorded nine double-doubles across 18 regular season games, the second-highest total in the AAC behind USF's Bethy Mununga (11).
Among American Athletic Conference players, Mendjiadeu finished the regular season as the only player ranked among the league's top seven performers in scoring (seventh), rebounding (second), field goal percentage (third, at 46.7%), and blocked shots per game (1.5, second). Mendjiadeu's 4.0 offensive rebounds per game and 6.56 defensive rebounds were the second-highest averages in the league, trailing USF's Mununga in both cases. In the only matchup between the two forwards on Dec. 17, Mendjiadeu posted 20 points and 14 rebounds while making eight of her 15 shots from the floor, outplaying Mununga (two points, 10 rebounds in 31 minutes) in the Tigers' seven-point loss.
Mendjiadeu's year-over-year improvement was readily apparent early in the year. In back-to-back December games, she set career highs in rebounds (17 against Saint Louis on Dec. 4) and points (23 against Liberty on Dec. 6), and after scoring 20 points only twice last season, Mendjiadeu reached the 20-point threshold five times this year. She also reeled in at least 14 rebounds on seven occasions this year, something she had never previously done.
In a historical context, Mendjiadeu's season average of 10.55 rebounds per game ranks seventh in program history, and her 24 career double-doubles is tied with Jasmine Lee for fifth on the all-time list. Mendjiadeu's second-team all-conference honor is the first for a Tiger since Ariel Hearn (2016). Mendjiadeu is also the third Tiger on the current roster to be awarded all-conference recognition, joining Jamirah Shutes (2019 All-Rookie Team) and Madison Griggs (2020 All-Freshman Team).
