ORLANDO – Sophomore defender Maliek Howell scored unassisted in the 86th minute but the comeback for Memphis men's soccer fell short in a 2-1 loss at UCF on Saturday at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex.
Howell's first career goal gives him three points on the season to go along with an assist.
The Knights opened the scoring in the 18th minute on a Yoni Sorokin penalty kick and made it 2-0 in the 60th minute on an Ariel Hadar goal on an assist from Hattabiou Barry.
UCF outshot Memphis 10-7 and 7-4 on shots on goal. Parker Lackland made five saves for the Tigers while Matt Douglass had three saves for the Knights. UCF had a 4-3 edge in corners.
Memphis fell to 1-3 while UCF snapped a two-match losing streak to improve to 2-3.
After playing three-straight matches on the road, the Tigers return home to face USF Saturday at 5:30 p.m. on the Park Avenue Campus.
