Wimberley named AAC Pitcher of the Week, Howell named to AAC Honor Roll

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers picked up their first two AAC weekly awards of the season following their weekend series win over Middle Tennessee State. Blake Wimberley was named the AAC Pitcher of the Week for his Friday night performance vs. the Blue Raiders, while Taylor Howell was named to the AAC Honor Roll for his dominant offensive effort throughout the weekend.
Wimberley spun a complete game shutout vs. the Blue Raiders on Friday. Over nine frames, the redshirt freshman allowed just three hits and walked just two. Wimberley struck out a career-high 12 in Memphis 1-0 victory. This is the first weekly award for Wimberley, though he was named to the 2019 AAC All-Academic Team. Across four starts this season, Wimberley is 1-2 with a 4.30 ERA and has struck out 29 in 23.0 innings.
Howell was one of the top hitters in the conference this week. In four games against the Blue Raiders, Howell slashed .455/.500/1.091, good for an OPS of 1.591, tops in the conference. Howell had two home runs and drove in four in the series win vs. the Blue Raiders. Howell has started all 17 games for the Tigers this season and has hit .276 with two home runs and 11 RBIs.
Memphis returns to action Tuesday and Wednesday on the road against No. 1 Arkansas. The Tigers and Razorbacks are set for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch Tuesday and 3 p.m. first pitch Wednesday in Fayetteville. The Tigers are back in action at FedExPark starting Friday for a weekend series vs. Murray State.
