Memphis women’s soccer beats Cincinnati 2-0 to remain unbeaten in conference play
Mar 18, 2021 | Women's Soccer
CINCINNATI — Behind an impressive performance in defense and goals from Kimberley Smit and Lisa Pechersky, the Memphis women's soccer team defeated Cincinnati 2-0 on Thursday.
The Tigers (5-1 overall, 4-0 AAC) have yet to allow a goal in four American Athletic Conference games this season. They are unbeaten in their last 16 regular-season conference games dating back to the 2018 season.
In the 42nd minute, a free kick from well outside the box slipped through the hands of Cincinnati goalkeeper Anna Rexford, took a deflection and crossed the goal line. Smit, a junior defender, was credited with her first goal of the season and fifth in her career.
Smit's goal came from one of the many chances the Tigers created in the first half with nine shots and four on goal. The Bearcats had just one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, which was saved by senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg.
Memphis doubled its lead on Pechersky's goal, assisted by Clarissa Larisey and Mya Jones, in the 57th minute. A senior midfielder, Pechersky now has two goals this season and five in her career.
The Memphis attack allowed little time for Cincinnati to gain possession, and the Tigers' backline performed well while the Bearcats managed just two shots on goal over the full 90 minutes.
The Tigers will play their second of four consecutive road games Sunday at Temple with kickoff set for 11 a.m. on ESPN+.
