The Tigers return to action for the first time since Nov. 9, 2019. Memphis and the American Athletic Conference postponed its fall 2020 competition to spring 2021 to align with the NCAA championship season. The Tigers capped the 2019 regular season with a 10-7 mark and 4-3 record in league play.
Despite graduating two key pieces off the 2019 roster, the Tigers return a balance of experience with nine upper classmen.
Memphis also returns its cornerstone net minder in junior goalkeeper Parker Lackland. The Dallas, Texas native logged nearly 1500 minutes in goal last year, registering a 1.45 goals-against average in 16 starts.
The group of veterans, which includes a trio of 2019 all-conference honorees in Gurman Sangha, Peter Chang and Ford Hunt, blends with a cohort of 10 newcomers. Sangha and Chang were also listed to the AAC Preseason All-Conference Team.
SMU visits Memphis after posting an 18-2-1 ledger in 2019. The Mustangs won the American Athletic Conference Tournament and concluded their season in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. SMU was picked to finish at the top of the AAC in the preseason poll. Gabriel Costa and Knut Ahlander were unanimous selections to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
The Mustangs lead the all-time series by a 14-4 margin, but Memphis bested SMU in the latest contest. The Tigers earned their highest-ranked win in program history after taking down No. 3 SMU on Oct. 18, 2019. It also marked the Mustangs' lone loss of the season until the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
