Memphis Athletics Sets Another Record in Graduation Success Rate
Dec 02, 2021 | General
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the seventh year in a row, University of Memphis student-athletes posted an all-time high Graduation Success Rate (GSR).
In the NCAA's GSR report for the most recent 2014 cohort (2011-14), which calculates the rate at which student-athletes graduated within six years, Memphis' GSR was 94 percent. That figure is the highest in the American Athletic Conference and above the Division I average of 89 percent.
Memphis' 2013 cohort (2010-13) had a 93 percent GSR, the 2012 cohort's (2009-12) was 92 percent and the 2011 cohort's (2008-11) was 90 percent.
"We are immensely proud of our most recent student-athlete graduation success rate," Memphis Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Laird Veatch said. "Thanks to the continuous hard work, dedication and commitment of our student-athletes and our staff at the Center for Athletic Academic Success, the University of Memphis is in rarefied air with this report. We strive to lead the conference on the playing field, and this report reaffirms our pledge to support and prepare our student-athletes in the classroom as well."
Additionally, Memphis' Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) of 66 percent for the 2014 cohort is improved from the 2013 cohort's 65 percent.
The GSR differs from the FGR in that it adds transfer students, mid-year enrollees and non-scholarship students (in specific cases) to the sample. This allows the GSR to more accurately look at student-athlete success by taking into account the full variety of participants in NCAA Division I and tracking their individual outcomes.
