Memphis Set for AAC Tournament Opener; Six Tigers Named All-Conference
Nov 09, 2021 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – On the eve of the semifinals of the 2021 American Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship, six Memphis Tigers earned postseason recognition from the conference.
Â
Forward Maxi Galizzi and defender Artur De Luca were named All-AAC First Team, midfielder Toby McCallum was placed on the all-conference second team and Eric Primo, Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos and Colin Welsh were voted to the All-Rookie Team.
Â
Galizzi finished third in the league with nine goals, and his 21 points on the season were fourth-most. In addition to playing solid defense, De Luca added four goals, tied for 10th-most in the AAC, including three game-winning scores.
Â
McCallum appeared in 15 games this season for the Tigers and was a key part of the club's turnaround from 1-6-1 at the start of the season to 5-2-1 down the stretch to finish in third place in the table.
Â
Primo, Rodrigues dos Santos and Welsh all made immediate impacts as freshmen, giving the Tigers a solid foundation for the future.
Â
The Tigers (6-8-2, 5-4-1 AAC), seeded third in the AAC Tournament, begin play in the semifinals Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against second-seeded UCF (8-7-0, 6-4-0 AAC). The match can be seen on ESPN+, and live stats are also available.
Â
"We are very excited about how the season ended and that we were able to make it to our conference tournament," Tiger head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "It was a grind to make it to Tulsa, and we are expecting the same with our next game vs UCF. We need to focus on our opponent and make sure we are well prepared for them mentally and physically, as they are a tough matchup."
Â
The Tigers and Knights split their pair of meetings this season, with UCF winning 4-1 in Memphis on Sept. 18 and the Tigers taking the game in Orlando on Oct. 3, 3-0.
Â
With a win, the Tigers would advance to the championship match Saturday at 7 p.m. against either top-seeded Tulsa or fourth-seeded SMU. That match will also be broadcast on ESPN+.
