Tigers Host SIUE in Sunday Afternoon Contest

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After opening the season with a 20-point victory over Xavier on Tuesday night, the Tigers (1-0) will return to Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon to take on the Cougars of SIUE.
Tuesday's game marks the first win in the Katrina Merriweather era and the first time the Tiger's opened their home schedule with a 20+ point margin of victory since the 2014-15 season.
The Musketeers kept within reaching distance of the Tigers through the first quarter, but Memphis' offense would heat up in the second quarter and take a 13-point lead going into halftime after Alana Davis sank two free-throws to make it a 43-30 game.
Jamirah Shutes led the way for Memphis with 15 points and seven rebounds while Davis and Emani Jefferson both added in 13 points. Along with Shutes, Davis and Jefferson, Lanetta Williams had an impressive opening to the season with a team-leading eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
SIUE (0-1) is coming off a 98-62 loss to Kansas this past Wednesday night where Mikayla Kinnard led the Cougars in points (14), rebounds (6) and assists (4) in the game. Along with Kinnard, Ajulu Thatha and Gabby Nikitinaite added in 11 points each.
The Cougars return 13 players from the 2020-21 season while adding in six new faces – including head coach Samantha Quigley Smith, who is in her first season at the helm of SIUE after spending the last four season at NCAA Division II school, Lewis University.
