Tigers Place Three on AAC Weekly Honors List
Oct 29, 2021 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – With a statement win over No. 14 SMU to end the regular season, the Tigers have placed three on the American Athletic Conference's final Weekly Honors with Grace Stordy as the Offensive Player of the Week, Haylee Spray as the Defensive Player of the Week and Jocelyn Alonzo as the Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Friday.
Stordy, who has been a staple in the Tiger's backline this season, let her offensive skills flex in the team's 5-0 win over SMU when she scored back-to-back goals in the 79' and 85'. She also helped Memphis' defense hold the Mustangs to just two shots for the entire match.
This is Stordy's first Offensive Player of the Week award.
Spray, a flex player in the Tiger's mid- and back field, netted the game-winning goal in Thursday night's victory. In the 33' of play, Spray fired a shot from the top of the box that would get past SMU's goalkeeper and give Memphis the 1-0 lead. Along with being a big part of the Tiger's midfield, Spray has also played a big role in helping the team to eight shutouts this season.
This is Spray's second Defensive Player of the Week win this season.
Alozno was a multi threat for the Tigers in their win over SMU; Alonzo recorded her fourth goal of the season in the 46' of play off a free-kick to extend Memphis' lead out to 2-0. She would then pick up an assist in the 74' when she sent a corner kick into the box and found the feet of Momo Nakao on the near-side post who flipped the ball into the back of the net for the Tiger's third goal of the night.
This is Alonzo's first Rookie of the Week award and her first AAC Weekly Honor of her career.
Memphis (11-4-1, 5-3-0 AAC) has secured the 3-seed in the AAC Championship. They will open the First Round against the 6-seed UCF on Sunday, Oct. 31. Game time is TBD.
