Women’s Soccer Hosts SMU in Final Regular Season Match

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Looking to get back in the win column in their final regular season match of the season, the Tigers will welcome the 14th ranked Mustangs of SMU to town this Thursday night.
Memphis (10-4-1, 4-3-0 AAC , who is currently sitting in 4th place in the American Athletic Conference standings, is looking to break a three-game losing skid. The Tigers had an early 1-0 lead over the Pirates of East Carolina this past Sunday after Jocelyn Alonzo sent a cross into the box and found Mya Jones open who connected with the back of the net. But, East Carolina would get two goals in the second half of play to hand Memphis the 2-1 loss.
For the season, senior Tanya Boychuk has been the heart of Memphis' offense with her team-leading six goals. Saorla Miller and Aubrey Mister are right behind her with four goals each while Alonzo has recorded three goals and three assists for far this season.
Despite the rut the Tigers have faced in the past three matches, Memphis has outscored their opponents 30-10 this season while holding teams to a combined 31 corner kicks while they have collected 116.
SMU (10-2-2, 4-1-2 AAC) is coming off back-to-back wins against Temple and Tulsa to move into 2nd place in the conference. The Mustangs got goals from Alina Khan and Mackenzie Rudden in the 18' and 25' on Sunday against Tulsa while their defense held the Golden Hurricane to just seven shots the entire 90 minutes of play.
For the season, Lindsey Whitmore leads the Mustangs with four goals and four assists while Courtney Sebazco has recorded four goals and one assist.
SMU has split time between Samantha Estrada and Tatum Sutherland in goal this season; Sutherland has played the bulk of AAC play with 50 saves and just five goals allowed in nine appearances.
Memphis hasn't played against the Mustangs since the 2019 season but ended up collecting two wins over SMU in a span of a week. After defeating them 2-1 in their final home regular season game, the Tigers downed SMU 4-2 in the quarterfinal game of the American Athletic Conference.
