Tiger Harriers Set to Compete in Final Meet Before Conference Championship
Oct 15, 2021 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Coming out of a weekend off, University of Memphis cross country teams are set to compete in the 2021 UAB Blazer Classic at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala., Saturday.
The women will race first in the 6k at 8:30 a.m., and the men will follow in the 8k at 9:15. This marks the last race for both teams before they travel to the American Athletic Conference Championship in two weeks.
"Both teams are looking forward to this meet, as in past years we have always raced well there," Assistant Cross Country Coach Ken Frenette said. "This is also an opportunity for our women to race a 6k before heading into the conference championship."
The women have yet to run a 6k this season; all four previous meets have been 5k races.
The Tigers last competed in the Blazer Classic in 2019, where the men's team placed third and the women's eighth. During that meet, the teams posted nearly 20 personal bests combined, and many of these athletes will be competing this weekend, including the 2019 front-runners Payton Gleason and Brooke Mussche.
"This meet plays a factor into who will be racing at conference," Frenette said. "The main thing we would like to see is our fourth through ninth runners to close the gap with our third or fourth runners. The weather looks great for Saturday, so it certainly is favorable racing conditions."
Competing Teams
Belmont, Birmingham Southern, Calhoun Community College, Clemson, Emory, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Memphis, Montevallo, New Orleans, North Alabama, Oglethorpe, Samford, Tulane, Tuskegee, Tennessee Southern, UAB, Vanderbilt and WKU.
