Tigers release 2021 spring schedule
Jan 26, 2021 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Set for its 26th season of competition, Memphis women's soccer released its spring 2021 schedule Wednesday. Memphis and the American Athletic Conference postponed its fall 2020 competition to spring 2021 to align with the NCAA championship season.
The 10-match spring slate is highlighted by eight conference matchups and includes two non-conference opponents, with select home matches to be broadcast on ESPN+.
Fan attendance to this spring's home matches will be limited to player and staff guests.
"There have been a lot of highs and lows with this pandemic and what all has gone on," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "At the end of the day, it feels great to be able to play a match against someone other than ourselves. I speak on behalf of our staff and players in that we're excited to play the game and coach the game we love."
The docket features five home matches at Park Avenue Campus for the Tigers, including their season opener against UAB on Feb. 4 at 6 p.m.
Memphis will open conference play on the road at Cincinnati on Feb. 14, followed by its first conference home match set for Feb. 21 against Tulsa.
After a trip to SMU to close the month of February, the Tigers will host UCF and Houston on March 7 and March 14, respectively. Memphis will visit Temple on March 21 before its final non-conference matchup of the season against reigning SEC Tournament champion Vanderbilt on March 27.
The final two contests of the regular season feature a trip to South Florida on April 3, while the Tigers will host ECU on April 11.
The semifinal round of The American Championships is set for Friday, April 16 with the championship final slated for Sunday, April 18. Both rounds of the AAC Championships will be hosted by the regular-season champion.
"Our goal is to win a conference championship and play in the NCAA Tournament. We feel our two non-conference matches complement our mission in reaching the NCAA Tournament and competing well in the postseason," Monaghan added. "It's different because you're only playing one game a week. It has its advantages with resting players and narrowing our focus to one opponent per week. We're looking forward to getting back to more games next fall, but this schedule sets up well for how we will train and prepare."
