Four-straight singles wins propel Memphis to victory
Baton Rouge, La. – Earning its biggest win of the season so far, the Memphis men's tennis team put up a strong singles performance to best No. 46 LSU on the road Wednesday evening. The Tigers upended the SEC foe 4-1 in Baton Rouge, La.
David Stevenson and Jan Pallares got the match going with a quick 6-0 blitz to start doubles on Court 1. LSU responded in kind with two finishes on the other doubles courts to take the first point of the match.
Regrouping for singles, the visiting Tigers pounced on early opportunities, winning four of the six first sets. From there, Oscar Cutting and Patrick Sydow would deliver straight-set wins on Courts 2 and 6, respectively.
Memphis continued to press onward, picking up a third win from James Story on Court 3. The freshman won his match with scores of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
The final piece of the puzzle came from Pallares on Court 1. After splitting the first two sets, the Barcelona, Spain native took control in the third set, winning it with a commanding 6-1 final.
LSU is the highest-ranked win so far this season, and an important confidence booster as the Tigers get set to pick up conference play again.
Next up for Memphis is the final road match of the season and a reentry into conference play. The Tigers will face off against Tulane on Sunday at 1 p.m.
