Gallegos Posts Runner-up Finish in Spring Opener

Memphis finishes fourth in first spring event.
TAMPA – Sophomore women's golfer Victoria Gallegos birdied her final two holes to post a third round 72 and move into a tie for second in the final round of the Old Friends Invitational, Tuesday. The second place finish is a career-best finish for Gallegos and helped her team to a fourth place finish at the spring-opening event. Memphis finished fourth at 929 behind host USF, High Point and James Madison.
Career-Best Finish for Gallegos
Gallegos started the spring the way she finished the fall, with a top 10 finish. Her third round 72 on Tuesday moved her to a tie for second with USF's Ramya Meenakshisundaram at 221. USF's Erika Smith claimed individual medalist honors with a 212 after firing a 70 (-2) on Tuesday.
Top 20 Finish for England
Freshman Victoria England posted her first career top 20 collegiate finish on Tuesday. England finished with an 83 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 20th at 235 (+19).
Matzat Bounce Back
Junior Julia Matzat opened the event with a career-low round of 74. Her second round 85 pushed her to outside the top 25, but on Tuesday, she bounced back with a 78 to finish tied for 22nd overall, her best career finish.
Veres' Best Career Finish
Freshman Brooke Veres competed in the event as an individual and matched her second round 79 with another one on Tuesday. Her 239 helped her finish tied for 25th overall, her best career finish.
Tigers on the Par 5's
Gallegos led the field in scoring average on Par 5 holes with a 4.58 average. Teammate Brooke Veres was tied for third with a 4.92 average.
Birdies Galore
Gallegos led the field with 11 birdies over the three rounds. Abby Herrmann was tied for third with eight. Veres had six birdies over the three rounds to make it into the top 20 statistics.
Low Round of the Day
Individual medalist Erika Smith of USF carded the low round of the day with a 70 (-2). That pushed her to -4 for the event and to the tournament title. Gallegos' 72 for Memphis was one of just two 72s on the day in the field for the second-lowest round of the day.
Top Five
USF had two finishers in the top five en route team tournament honors (Smith, Meenakshisundaram). Kate Owens of James Madison was fourth at 222 and Samantha Vodry of High Point finished fifth at 225.
Team Top Fives
USF claimed the team title with a 886 (+22) following a third round 299. High Point (906), James Madison (917), Memphis (929) and Richmond (943) rounded out the top five.
Next Up
Memphis will be back in Florida at the end of the month when the Lady Tigers play in the Florida State Matchup Feb. 29-Mar. 1.
