Tigers slip against Ole Miss before routing UT Martin

OXFORD, Miss. – Playing a double-header in Oxford, Miss., the Memphis women's tennis team split its matches on Monday, falling to Ole Miss before rallying against UT Martin.

Starting the day against the hometown Rebels, the Tigers fell behind early and found themselves unable to catch up. The lone bright spots from the match were a 6-2 win for doubles pair Josephine Cao and Lina Hohnhold and a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep for Hohnhold in singles.

"Ole Miss outcompeted us in a few positions, and we missed some opportunities in others," head coach Hayden Perez said of the morning match. "Credit to Ole Miss for playing well, and we hope to put this one in the past."

Memphis would do just that, picking itself up and defeating the Skyhawks in convincing fashion in the afternoon session.

With renewed verve, all three doubles courts would be taken by Memphis, with Court 1 finishing 7-5, while Courts 2 and 3 were taken with 6-2 and 6-1 scores, respectively.

Playing to the clinching four points, Memphis only needed three wins in singles to end action, and they came in straight sets. Hohnhold, on Court 6, continued her day of dominance, sweeping a second-straight opponent in 6-0, 6-0 sets.

Freshmen Aran Teixido Garcia, on Court 3, and Monique Woog, on Court 4, would finish the match by winning in convincing fashion as well. Teixido Garcia took straight sets 6-2 and 6-3, while Woog ran away with 6-1, 6-1 sets of her own to finalize the day.

"The girls did a great job focusing and putting the morning's loss aside," Perez said of the win. "We're going to learn from the day as a whole and use it as we prepare for Auburn."

The Tigers have one more road game before their home opener. Next up, Memphis travels to Auburn for a 10 a.m. match.
