No. 18 Tigers down North Texas for third shutout of season
Sep 06, 2019 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – An early score held ground as No. 18 Memphis women's soccer posted its second consecutive shutout, taking down North Texas by a final of 1-0 on Friday night at Park Avenue Campus.
Much like its 1-0 victory at Omaha on Sunday, scoring came at a premium. Memphis (4-1) tallied the lone goal in the ninth minute of play, yet persisted offensively throughout the match. The Tigers outshot the Mean Green (3-2) by an 18-6 margin, including a 10-2 difference in shots on goal.
"North Texas is a really good team and they win a lot of games. We knew it was going to be a dogfight," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "They changed their system a little bit. We knew it would be close. I wish we could have finished a few more chances, but we created them. Tonight was a very good win."
The home side struck first in the ninth minute of action, as sophomore Kimberley Smit netted her first score of the season. A short free kick taken by Serena Dolan found its way in the box, and Smit cleaned up the loose ball on the doorstep to give Memphis the early advantage.
Defensively, Memphis pitched its third shutout of the season, limiting the Mean Green to six shots. In goal, junior Elizabeth Moberg collected her second full clean sheet of the year and 19th of her career after two saves.
"I thought our defense did a tremendous job," Monaghan added. "They are very dangerous on set pieces, including throws. We spoke specifically about that. We worked on that, and I thought the team did well."
Memphis faces a quick turnaround as the Tigers travel to Mississippi State for a match on Sunday. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m. and will air on SEC Network +.
