Sophomore was team's top finisher at Twilight Classic Saturday.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis sophomore Payton Gleason has been the American Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is the first conference accolade of Gleason's career.
In Saturday's season-opening race at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Collierville, Gleason led the Tigers as the team's top finisher in the City Auto Memphis Twilight Classic. Memphis placed fourth as a team in the event.
Gleason placed sixth in a time of 20:01.95 on the Twilight Classic's four-mile course. His time of 20:01.95 was the best by a Tiger in the Twilight Classic since the men's race changed to a four-mile format in 2011. The previous best time in the Twilight Classic four-mile race was 20:02.36 by Julian Sanchez-Pinto in 2016.
The Churchville, N.Y., native's effort shaved 58 seconds off his 2018 time in the event. In the 2018 race, Gleason ran a 20:59.95.
Memphis returns to action Sept. 7 when it travels to Florence, Ala., for the North Alabama Invitational. The women's team is running a 5k race, and the men's squad an 8k. The action begins at 8:30 a.m. (CT) at McFarland Park in Florence.
