Men's Soccer Lands Four on Weekly Awards List
Sep 02, 2019 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – After the first week of the season, the UofM Men's Soccer team landed four student-athletes on the American Athletic Conference's weekly award list. Senior defender Ben Roberts was named the conference's Defensive Player of the week and freshman mid Jovan Prado was named Rookie of the Week. Additionally, freshman Peter Chang and sophomore Gurman Sangha were named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Roberts earned his second career Defensive Player of the Week nod after scoring the game-winner in the 4-0 season opener against Campbell. The Liverpool, England native also captured the selection on Oct. 22 of last season. In addition to his offensive productions, Roberts captained a defense that allowed zero shots from the visiting Camels. The blank shot chart marked the first time since 2001 that a Memphis team did not allow an opponent to record a shot.
Earning his first Rookie of the Week honor, Prado scored three points in the win over Campbell. The freshman scored the third goal of the match before assisting on the fourth. Prado's pressure up top, along with his combination of speed, size and skill gave the Camels all they could handle on Friday.
Not to be discredited for his freshman opening weekend, Chang got in on the scoring as well, hitting the opening goal against Wright State on Sunday. After taking a pass in the right corner, Chang created some space for himself before letting loose on the shot, marking his first collegiate score.
Coming off the bench as a substitute, Sangha still made an impact on both matches over the weekend. He capped the scoring against the visiting Camels with a goal in the 84th minute, finishing a two-on-one break with Prado. Against Wright State, he earned a PK after being fouled in the box, which he finished in the bottom left corner of the net.
Memphis heads out on its first road trip of the year as the Tigers head to Birmingham, Ala., to participate in UAB's Soccer for a Cure Classic. The Tigers will face Milwaukee on Friday at 4:30 p.m., before playing Mercer on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Follow the Tigers on social media at /MemphisSoccer and @MemphisMSoccer for more information.
