Sam Ashton named Offensive Player of the Week, Chris Mikus added to Honor Roll
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Two Tigers have been added to the American Athletic Conference's weekly award list for the past week of play. Sam Ashton, senior forward on the Memphis men's soccer team, was named the American Athletic Conference's Offensive Player of the Week, while redshirt junior Chris Mikus was named to the Honor Roll.
Ashton earns the weekly accolade after a highlight-reel of offense in the 3-2 double-overtime win over No. 10/11 Xavier on Saturday. The forward scored all three goals for the Tigers, registering the first hat trick by a Memphis player since 2015. It also marked the highest ranked opponent to fall to the Tigers since 2011.
Through three weeks of the season, Ashton is first in the conference with two game-winning goals, tied for second with five total goals and is fourth in the AAC with 10 points. Nationally, his five goals are tied for tenth in the NCAA.
The award comes a week after Ashton was named to the Weekly Honor Roll. Ashton's five goals on the year lead the team. He also leads the team with two PK goals and two game-winners.
Mikus was included on the Weekly Honor Roll after assisting on two of Ashton's goals against Xavier. The Atlanta, Georgia native redirected a ball to Ashton on the equalizer in the 69th minute, resulting in a nice header from Ashton, before picking up the helper on the game-winner in the 109th minute of double-overtime.
The nod is the first of the season for Mikus, after being named to the Honor Roll twice last season. After recording the two assists, Mikus now leads the team in helpers. His assist mark also lands him tied for fourth in the AAC.
Memphis finishes its four-game slate away from home with a match against Belmont in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday. Follow the Tigers on social media at /MemphisSoccer and @MemphisMSoccer for more information.
