Memphis collects fourth consecutive shutout behind 6-0 win
Sep 12, 2019 | Women's Soccer
The Tigers registered 36 shots, which marks the most in a decade when Memphis attempted 50 shots against Evansville in 2009.
"I was pleased with tonight. We challenged the kids to come out with energy from the get-go, and they did," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "The last time we played here, I don't think that happened. That was the message, to truly put them under pressure. To score six goals in a half, I'm very pleased."
Memphis began the scoring barrage when junior Clarissa Larisey finished a pass from freshman Mya Jones just over six minutes into the match. Jones then extended the Tigers' advantage with her first goal of her career three minutes later.
Junior Samantha Murphy and senior Stasia Mallin connected on the following two scores. The third goal of the match came when a Murphy header in front of the net finished a cross from Mallin down the right side. The duo added one more score after a service via a corner kick from Mallin yielded another score from Murphy.
Sophomore Tanya Boychuk logged her fourth goal of the season in the 21st minute, and Allie Rathbun capped the scoring with her first career score in the 28th minute.
Defensively, the Tigers pitched their fourth consecutive clean sheet. Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg and senior keeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard split time in net. The senior keeper logged the squad's lone save of the match, stopping a shot on the doorstep in the 64th minute to preserve the shutout.
Experience served key in the second half as all 21 field players saw action throughout the match, while all Memphis substitutes saw at least 27 minutes of time.
"You need these games where everybody can play," Monaghan added of the youthful minutes. "Most of them played a lot of minutes tonight. We need to grow and get deeper, and this is how you get deeper."
The Tigers return to action on Sunday when Memphis travels to Central Arkansas. Kickoff against the Bears is set for 7 p.m.
