The non-conference schedule features an international trip to the Bahamas in November
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The University of Memphis women's basketball team announced its 2019-20 non-conference schedule Thursday morning, a schedule that features seven home games and a Thanksgiving trip to the Bahamas.
"Along with our returners, we welcome eight talented newcomers to our program," said head coach Melissa McFerrin. "I've witnessed a group with a heightened commitment to our work habits and team dynamics. They are anxious to be coached and show tremendous competitiveness."
The highest-ranked recruiting class under the direction of McFerrin will play in a non-conference schedule highlighted with an international trip to the Bahamas where Memphis will compete in the Junkanoo Jam on Nov. 29 and 30.
The Tigers open the tournament against Kansas State and follow that with a contest against either LSU or Michigan State. Kansas State and Michigan State earned berths into the 2019 NCAA Tournament after both teams won 21 games, last season.
"This is a tournament that allows us to compete against some of the elite teams in the country," said McFerrin. "Competing in the Junkanoo Jam provides us an opportunity to experience a high-level of competition early in the season. This allows us to measure our strengths and weaknesses as we prepare for conference play."
Memphis starts out with three of the first four games at home, opening the season against Alcorn State on Nov. 5. The Tigers then welcome Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 9 and George Washington on Nov. 17 in the return game after playing in Washington, D.C. last season.
The Tigers travel to Louisiana Tech on Nov. 13 for the first road trip of the 2019-20 campaign. Additional road trips for Memphis during the month of November are at Southern Illinois on Nov. 20 and at Toledo on Nov. 24.
Louisiana Tech has been on the Tigers schedule dating back to the 2015-16 campaign. Toledo and Memphis met for the first-time last season and Southern Illinois has been on Memphis' schedule four out of the last five seasons. Toledo finished with 21 wins last season and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.
"The non-conference schedule we've put together will give us a challenge, but allow for us to be prepared for when American Athletic Conference play begins in January," added McFerrin.
Upon returning from the Bahamas, Memphis welcomes UAB and Arkansas State in back-to-back home games on Dec. 8 and Dec. 14. The Blazers finished last season with a 26-7 overall record before seeing their season end in the second round of the WNIT.
The final road trip of the non-conference schedule is a trip to Little Rock on Dec. 17. The Trojans earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament last season after winning the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in New Orleans.
Memphis returns home for one final game before final exams on Dec. 20 against Mississippi Valley State. The Tigers will play their final non-conference game against Alabama A&M on Dec. 30.
The Tigers host one exhibition game in the preseason, facing Christian Brothers on Oct. 30 at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
