MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a 2-0 start to the 2019 campaign, a pair of Memphis women's soccer student-athletes were recognized by the American Athletic Conference as its players of the week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Junior Clarissa Larisey was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week while freshman Mya Jones claimed Rookie of the Week honors.
Larisey capped the first week of her junior campaign with four goals. The junior scored a hat trick in the Tigers' 6-0 shutout against Little Rock to open the season. Her three consecutive goals spanned 3:26 for the first hat trick in program history since 2013. On Sunday, she sealed Memphis' 3-1 win against Ole Miss by driving coast-to-coast for a score in the waning seconds of the match.
Named to The American's Preseason Team earlier this month, Monday's recognition is Larisey's fourth career Offensive Player of the Week nod after claiming the same honors on three occasions last season.
Jones made her first two collegiate starts last week as she helped Memphis to a 2-0 mark. The Calgary, Alberta native registered a pair of assists in Memphis' 6-0 win against Little Rock on Thursday. Jones also notched a pair of shots throughout the week with one coming on goal.
Although limited in the score sheet on Sunday, the rookie was also pivotal in Memphis' 3-1 win against Ole Miss. With the game tied 1-1 in the 88th minute, Jones' service in to the box was deflected by a Rebel defender into the back of the net for an own goal.
Larisey, Jones and the Tigers seek to carry the early-season momentum on the road as Memphis travels to Kansas on Thursday. Kick off against the Jayhawks is slated for 7 p.m.
