Sophomore to compete in trio of international friendlies
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's soccer sophomore Tanya Boychuk has been named to Canada Soccer's U-20 squad and will compete in an international series in England later this week.
The Edmonton, Alberta, native was one of 20 picked to represent Canada in the international series, which will be held July 9-16.
The announcement marks the second time Boychuk has been selected to the U-20 team roster. Boychuk first joined the team in 2017 and also competed with the U-20 national team at the 2018 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier.
Boychuk joins 10 other student-athletes who play Division I soccer, including representatives from Illinois, Louisville, Oregon, Santa Clara, Texas, UCLA and Vanderbilt. The sophomore forward noted she looks forward to sharpening her game alongside some of the best collegiate athletes.
"It's a really high level here," Boychuk said. "There are players from UCLA, Santa Clara, West Virginia – everywhere. It's high intensity, even in practice. It's a great experience to bring back to Memphis."
As part of the three-match series, Canada will play in friendlies against England on July 9, Northern Ireland on July 13 and England again to close the international trip on July 16. The matches mark preparation for qualifiers held later this year ahead of the 2020 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
Boychuk, who arrived in England on Friday, added the early stages of camp have been around developing relationships and establishing comfort with the new team.
"When I was coming in earlier, I was playing up, so I was the youngest of the age groups. Now I'm finally at the top of the group, so I feel more comfortable and confident," Boychuk noted. "There are five of us (at the top of the age group), and most of them I have played with. I've played with a lot of them in the last U-20 cycle, but there are a lot of them that are new that have come up. It's about creating those new partnerships."
In her rookie campaign for the Tigers, Boychuk registered three goals and one assist in 20 games, while also drawing starts in six contests. She was also tabbed to the American Athletic Conference All-Rookie team.
"So far my time in England has been great. The combinations have been great," Boychuk added. "I'm looking forward to a successful trip here, and coming back to Memphis to help us compete for another conference championship."
