William Harwood adds key depth to Tigers' 2019-20 lineup
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – William Harwood, a former standout at Elon University and the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Golfer of the Year, is joining the University of Memphis men's golf team as a transfer.
Â
Harwood's addition will help the Tigers offset the loss of seniors Bradley Bawden and Chase Harris. Harwood will have one season of eligibility.
Â
Harwood, from Columbia, S.C., became the first golfer in Elon history to earn CAA Golfer of the Year. He recorded five Top 10 finishes during his junior season and had a second-place showing at the conference tournament.
Â
"William is a really nice, late, addition to our 2019-20 roster," said Tigers men's golf coach Blake Smart. "He brings three years of Division 1 experience and has shown the ability to win at the collegiate and amateur level. I expect him to see a lot of playing time and push our depth to a level that not many teams have."
Â
As a sophomore, he earned three Top 10 finishes during the season and competed in 11 tournaments. His best finish was a tie for fourth at the Phoenix Invitational, a tournament that saw him shoot a season-low 66. He matched the 66 at the UNCG Martin Downs. He finished the season with a 74.15 stroke average. During the summer, he won the South Carolina Golf Association Amateur Championship.
Â
As a freshman, he competed in 11 tournaments, including finishing as co-champion at the Pinehurt Intercollegiate. He finished the season with a 73.7 stroke average.
