Track And Field Wins Seven Medals Sunday

Women's squad places fourth for best conference finish since 1996.
WICHITA, Kan. – Behind the strength of two golds and two silvers, the University of Memphis women's track and field squad posted a fourth-place team finish, the program's best performance at a conference meet since 1996. The Tigers women placed fourth with 90 points at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships Sunday.

Saida Burns-Moore, Mona Jaidi and Samantha Lenton led the charge for the Memphis women's team on the final day of The American Championships. Burns-Moore added 18 points to the Tigers' cause by herself with a title in the women's high jump and a second-place finish in the women's triple jump. Her leap in the triple jump of 43-0.25 (13.11m) was a personal-best.

The Jaidi-Lenton tandem scored 18 points with first- and second-place performances, respectively, in the women's discus.

On the men's side, the Tigers placed sixth with 74 points and earned three medals (one gold/two silver). Freshman Adar Sheere paced the men's effort with a gold-medal performance in the men's discus. Sheere threw a personal-best 188-7 (57.48m), out-distancing his previous-best by nearly a foot (187-8; 57.21m).

With Jaidi's and Sheere's gold medals in the discus, Memphis became the first program to sweep both outdoor titles in American Athletic Conference Championships history.

For the weekend, Memphis won 12 medals, with the breakdown of four golds, seven silvers and one bronze. In addition, Sheere earned The American's Male Freshman of the Year award for being the top men's freshman scorer at the meet. He had 16 points with his discus title (10 points) and fourth-place hammer performance (6 points). It is the first season The American awarded this honor.

The Tigers await word from the NCAA on East Preliminaries qualifiers this week. The NCAA East Preliminaries are set for Jacksonville, Fla., May 23-25. The University of North Florida is the host for the regional meet.

Tigers Tidbits
- On Sunday, 17 different Tigers (men/women combined) scored.
- Senior Davon DeMoss earned a silver in the men's 100 meters, and he did so in record-setting fashion. DeMoss shattered his school record with a time of 10.05 seconds. His previous school record was 10.17 in 2017.
- Davon DeMoss also was a part of another school record Sunday when the Tigers men's 4x100-meter relay team improved on the previous record. DeMoss joined Imri Persiado, Calvin Austin III and Andrew Bishop on the record-setting relay that finished second in a time of 39.47. The previous record was 39.51 set earlier this season.
- Davon DeMoss ran a personal-best 20.60 in the men's 200 meters. His previous-best was 20.72.
- Paris Perkins ran a personal-best 53.89 in the women's 400 meters. She placed fourth in the event. Her previous-best was 54.41 at Auburn's War Eagle Invitational in mid-April.
- Freshman Rosie Cicmanec scored in her first appearance at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. She placed fifth with a personal-best height of 5-6 (1.68m) in the women's high jump.
- Megan (Briley) Ryan and Paige Sandwell both posted personal-bests in the women's 5000 meters. Ryan improved her time by over 17 seconds.
