Wesner Wins Gold At Conference Championships

Fifteen Tigers brought home 20 all-league honors from the two-day meet.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Memphis' Jordan Wesner claimed the program's second gold of the 2019 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Saturday when he won the men's high jump. Wesner was one of 10 Tigers to earn all-league honors in second-day action at the conference meet.

Wesner, who won the 2017 men's high jump crown, returned to the top of the podium with a 7-3.25 (2.22m) effort Saturday. Wesner's 7-3.25 (2.22m) mark also was a conference meet record, edging the previous record of 7-3 (2.21m) set in 2016. Wesner did not compete in the 2018 indoor season.

Another school record fell Saturday when Sir Newton Lee ran a 46.79 in the men's 400 meters to finish third and earn bronze. Lee broke the previous record of 46.90 set by Victor Lacey in 1982.

On the women's side, Saida Burns-Moore won two medals on the day. Burns-Moore took home bronze in both the women's high and triple jumps.

The men's team finished third (106 points) and was only one point out of second (Wichita State, 107 points). The Tigers were runner-up at the 2018 conference indoor meet. The women's squad finished eighth with 36.5 points.

Tigers Tidbits
- The men's team's third-place finish was its second-consecutive top-three performance at the conference meet. It's the first time the Tigers had back-to-back top-three finishes on the men's side since the 1994 and 1995 Great Midwest Conference indoor meets.
- In addition to Saida Burns-Moore double-medal performance, two other Tigers earned two medals on Saturday. Davon DeMoss took home two silvers in the men's 60 meters and 4x400-meter relay, and Sir Newton Lee won bronze in the men's 400 meters and silver in the 4x400-meter relay.
- In the two-day meet, Memphis had five performers that won two medals. Saida Burns-Moore, Davon DeMoss and Sir Newton Lee all won their medals on Saturday. Zachary Wyatt and Naaman Norment won gold in the men's distance medley relay Friday and each added another medal on Saturday. Zachary Wyatt took bronze in the men's mile, and Norment ran a leg on the silver-medal 4x400-meter relay.
- Overall, a total of fifteen Tigers (men/women combined) earned 20 all-conference accolades.
- Davon DeMoss' two silvers Saturday brings his career indoor total to five all-conference honors.
- Olushola Olojo's bronze in the men's triple jump was his fourth career indoor medal. His jump of 50-8.75 (15.46m) tied his indoor personal-best.
- Three other Tigers took home their third career indoor medal, and they were Calvin Austin III, Saida Burns-Moore and Jordan Wesner.
- Noah Agnew (men's high jump) and Adam Neelly (men's shot put) won silvers Saturday, as each claimed his second career indoor medal. Agnew's 7-0.5 (2.15m) jump is an indoor personal-best.
- Other Saturday scorers for the Tigers men's team were: Imri Persiado (8th) in the 60 meters, Calvin Austin III (6th) in the 200 meters, Tate Wyatt (4th) in the mile, and Matthew Kamph (5th) and Julian Sanchez-Pinto (6th) in the 3000 meters.
- Other Saturday scorers for the Memphis women's team were Paris Perkins (7th) in the 400 meters and DeeNia McMiller (6th) and Mona Jaidi (8th) in the shot put.
- Five of the Tigers' six runners in the men's 3000 meters set indoor personal-bests. They were Matthew Kamph, Julian Sanchez-Pinto, Payton Gleason, Zachary Wyatt and Christian Corsello.
- Three women's performers set personal-bests Satuday, and they were: Gabrielle Byndas in the 3000 meters, Christian Hill in the triple jump and Mona Jaidi in the shot put.Â
