Tigers set for Opening Day against Indiana

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Entering its 106th season, the University of Memphis baseball team will open the 2019 campaign with a three-game set against Indiana. First pitch for Opening Day on Friday is set for 4 p.m.

Memphis and Indiana are meeting on the diamond for just the third time in each program's histories. Memphis dropped a 9-8 contest in the second game of the 2005 season at the Service Academies Classic in Millington, Tenn. The Tigers evened the series two seasons later with a 5-3 triumph at AutoZone Park.
This year's team features the leadership of nine seniors, all of whom seek to play an integral part of the 2019 campaign. Defensively, the Tiger infield remained mostly intact, anchored by seniors Kyle Ouellette and Cale Hennemann at first and third, respectively. Senior Jason Santana also brings back a wealth of experience behind the dish.
Memphis returns four of its top five hitters by average, including Hennemann, who led the squad with a .299 average last season and hit .377 during league play. Junior Alec Trela seeks to build upon a successful 2018 at the plate after leading the team in RBI (39) and home runs (7).
Senior LHP Hunter Smith is the projected Opening Day starter on the mound for Memphis. The senior posted a team-best 3.08 ERA in 2018. Smith also recorded 63 strikeouts on a staff that set a school-record 484 punchouts last season.
