Griggs leads the league with 39 three-pointers this season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the second time in her career, University of Memphis freshman guard Madison Griggs has been named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week for her work in Memphis' 79-71 win over Alabama A&M Monday evening.
Â
Griggs becomes the third Memphis player since the inception of The American to earn Freshman of the Week honors twice. Mooriah Rowser earned it twice during the 2013-14 season while Jamirah Shutes earned it twice last season.
Â
Against Alabama A&M, Griggs produced her third 20-point performance of the season including five made three-pointers. Her five treys marked the sixth time this season she recorded at least four three-pointers in a game.
Â
With 39 three-pointers to-date, Griggs is fourth all-time for more three's made by a Memphis freshman. The league record for three-pointers made by a freshman is 78 set by UConn's Katie Lou Samuelson.
Â
Her 39 three-pointers are the most in The American through 13 games. She ranks second in three-point field goal percentage at 45.3, a point and a half behind UConn's Megan Walker. Walker, however, has attempted 39 less three-pointers this season.
Â
The Tigers begin conference play on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020 at Houston. Tipoff on ESPNU is slated for 3 p.m. at the Fertitta Center. For more information, follow the Tigers on social media at @MemphisWBB.
