The Memphis Tigers
Memphis heads into this match hosting an AAC Championship game for the first time in program history. This season, the conference revamped the postseason to where the 3- and 4-seeded teams host the quarterfinal round before winners head to the 1-seed site. Thus, the winner on Saturday will head to Orlando, Fla. to face the 1-seed UCF Knights.
"At the beginning of the year, you set goals, and one of ours was not only to make the tournament, but host a game or more," Head Coach Richard Mulrooney said. "We have an opportunity to advance like we did last year, and we control our own destiny."
Last time out for the Tigers resulted in a loss to USF on Tuesday. Despite outshooting the Bulls 12-9, the Tigers coud not find the back of the net enough to overcome an early deficit. Peter Chang recorded the lone goal in the 3-1 loss.
Sam Ashton leads the team with 10 scores, a total that has not been seen from a Tiger since 2012. Ashton ranks third in the AAC and 26th in the nation in total goals scored.
With 10 wins now in 2019, the squad has set a new career-best for head coach Richard Mulrooney. The Creighton grad's team has set several new benchmarks this season, including a new program record with its fifth-consecutive road win after defeating No. 3 SMU, paired along with a road win against then-No. 10 Xavier.
Memphis won its quarterfinal match in last season's Championship, defeating USF with a 3-1 score. Goals from current Tigers Chris Mikus and Gurman Sangha helped Memphis to its first AAC Championship victory.
A Look at the Owls
Temple's regular season ended in a double-overtime loss to SMU. After equalizing 65 seconds after conceding a goal, the game-winner by SMU came in the 106th minute, leaving the Owls in the 5-seed.
The Owls have three players leading the team with three goals. Lukas Fernandez leads the team in points, adding four assists to his three goals.
Defense is key for the Owls, having allowed only 16 goals all season, holding opponents to fewer than 12 shots per game.
