Women's Basketball Opens Regular Season Against Alcorn State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a win in its lone exhibition game, the University of Memphis women's basketball team begins its 2019-20 regular season on Tuesday, facing Alcorn State at 5 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

The Tigers open the season after playing a single exhibition game last Wednesday, taking a 71-61 victory over Christian Brothers University. Senior guard Gazmyne Herndon led Memphis with 11 points and five assists. Freshman Lanetta Williams also chipped in double-digit scoring.
A game that allowed the newcomers to display their talents, the new bunch on the team combined for 38 points, 25 rebounds, nine assists and nine steals. Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu pulled down a team-best 13 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.
In recent season openers, the Tigers have won eight in a row, dating back to 2011. Last season's saw Jamirah Shutes lead the team with 20 points in the 68-67 win over Jackson State.
Head coach Melissa McFerrin enters her 12th season at the helm of the program as the third-winningest head coach in school history with 175 victories for the Blue and Gray.
Scouting the Lady Braves
Alcorn State opens the season having returned four starters and nine letterwinners. The Lady Braves brought in six newcomers to fill out the roster.
Senior guard Jada Hargrove is the team's top scoring returner after averaging 10.1 points per game. She was also fourth in the SWAC in assists, averaging 3.7 per contest.
Entering her fifth season, Courtney Pruitt stands at the helm of a team looking to improve after a 4-26 season last year.
