Men's golf in third place after opening day

Freshman Ulta Namkang, senior Isaiah Jackson lead Tigers
SHREVEPORT, La. – University of Memphis freshman Ultra Namkang, making his college debut, shot 5-under 139 on the opening day of David Toms Intercollegiate at Southern Trace Country Club to help the Tigers place third after 36 holes.

The Tigers enter Sunday's final round at 17-under 559.

LSU had golfers Hayden White (68-63), Garrett Barber (69-63), Trey Winstead (65-69) and Philip Barbaree (65-70) finish 1-2-3-4 individually to propel LSU to a commanding 46-under 530 after 36 holes, 28 shots better than second-place Arkansas Tech.

Namkang, from Thailand, shot even-par 72 in the opening round on the 7,048-yard layout and followed with a 5-under 67 in the second round to finish in a tie for ninth. Senior Isaiah Jackson also fired a 5-under 139, which included a 3-under 69 in the second round. Other Tigers competing were Guillaume Chevalier (70-70 for 140), Nick Giles (69-74 for 143) and Rodi Vlasveld (70-77 for 147).

William Harwood participated as an individual and shot 72-70 for 2-under 142.

Memphis is coming off a fifth-place finish in its opening tournament, the Graeme McDowell Invitational Sept. 23-24 at Birmingham.
